According to OSEN on April 25, Kang Dong-won is expected to join director Kwak Kyung-taek’s new film Tobeol. A representative for the actor confirmed: “It is true that he has received an offer to appear in Tobeol and is currently reviewing it.”
Tobeol is a historical film set during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on the period around the liberation of Korea. Being a period piece, the film is expected to require a large-scale budget, with production led by AD406. Meanwhile, Showbox, known for producing back-to-back box office hits, is reportedly in talks to handle investment and distribution.
In addition to Kang Dong-won, the production is also targeting famous actresses in their 20s and 30s for the female lead role. Another important character has also been offered to a well-known actor, who is currently revising the script.
The film will be directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, who won acclaim for his iconic film noir Friend. He has since built a strong filmography with works such as Typhoon, Eye for an Eye, Friend 2, The Classified File and Firefighters.
Meanwhile, Kang Dong-won is already attracting attention with his upcoming film Wild Sing, which will premiere on June 3. In the film, he transforms into a member of a 1990s co-ed idol group called Triangle. The comedy follows the group’s attempt to make a comeback 20 years after disbanding due to an unexpected accident.
In Wild Sing, Kang Dong-won stars alongside Uhm Tae-goo and Park Ji-hyun, recreating the nostalgic atmosphere of 90s K-pop through creative SNS marketing. With his idol transformation already making waves, anticipation continues to grow for his potential role in Tobeol, signaling another challenging chapter in his acting career.
