An n.SSign member is facing backlash after comments shared on Weverse sparked criticism among international fans.
Recently, Laurence posted messages discussing how fans often label idols with titles like “the best of a generation”. However, one part of his statement immediately caught attention: “Every time I see things like ‘the best male idol of the fifth generation’, ‘the best singer of the 5th generation’ and ‘the best composer of the 5th generation’, I can’t help but laugh. I also saw ‘the best female idol of Indonesia’. I wonder how many Indonesians there are in the entire Korean entertainment industry.”
While some interpreted the comment as a criticism of the fan-created rankings, many others felt the wording came across as dismissive or insensitive.
The reaction intensified when fans linked the remark to Hearts2Hearts’ Carmen, currently one of the few Indonesian idols actively promoting K-pop.
Critics argued that the statement could be seen as a threat to both the idol and the broader representation of Indonesians in the industry.
Following the controversy, Laurence shared an apology via the group’s official account. He made it clear that he does not intend to use negative expressions on the matter “other artists, their fans or an entire country”.
