A new legal battle surrounding the estate of late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu has sparked heated debate in Chinese-speaking communities after reports claimed that her husband, DJ Koo (Koo Jun Yup), is trying to claim inheritance rights and contest part of the estate intended for his two children.
According to Sohu, the Korean singer filed a lawsuit alleging that he was forced to sign documents relinquishing his inheritance rights shortly after Barbie Hsu’s death while emotionally distraught and without legal or linguistic assistance.
Court documents reportedly state that Koo Jun Yup believes his mother-in-law, Huang Chunmei, forced him to give up his inheritance while he was grieving. He further argues that:
- He did not have an attorney present.
- No Chinese interpreter was provided.
- He was later forced to leave the house he had shared with Barbie Hsu.
DJ Koo also claims that Barbie Hsu’s sister, Dee Hsu, Dee’s husband, Mike Hsu, and another family member assisted in the trial.
The biggest point of contention is the news that DJ Koo is not only seeking to recover his inheritance rights, but is also disputing approximately two-thirds of the estate legally awarded to Barbie Hsu’s two children. According to China Times, all parties are expected to attend court-ordered mediation this week, while Koo has assembled a legal team to challenge the validity of the inheritance waiver.
Meanwhile, Barbie Hsu’s family has denied allegations that they evicted him from their home, but has not publicly addressed the remaining legal claims.

The news immediately sparked heated reactions on Chinese social media. Many users criticized DJ Koo, accusing him of trying to seize assets belonging to Barbie Hsu’s children. Others say the inheritance dispute marks just the beginning of what could become a long legal battle. It is important to note, however, that these reactions reflect public opinion shared online rather than findings determined by a court.
The inheritance lawsuit also renewed scrutiny of several previous disputes involving DJ Koo. Among them:
- Allowing a Korean TV crew to film Barbie Hsu’s memorial activities.
- He allegedly discussed details about his death on Korean television before receiving approval from his family.
- Facing criticism over the design of Barbie Hsu’s memorial statue, which many fans said bore no resemblance to the actress.
Some online commentators have interpreted these incidents as evidence that DJ Koo sought publicity following his wife’s death, although he has not publicly admitted this motive.
Barbie Hsu’s ex-husband, Wang Xiaofei, has also returned to the center of online discussions. His highly publicized mourning scene following Barbie Hsu’s death had previously been criticized by media reports that it was staged to draw attention to his live streaming business. He was also accused of using online accounts to amplify sympathetic narratives about himself, accusations that fueled public skepticism at the time.

With mediation expected in the coming days, the Barbie Hsu ownership dispute will likely remain one of the most-watched celebrity legal battles in Greater China.
At present, many of the allegations reported by Chinese media remain controversial and legal proceedings are ongoing. The outcome of the mediation – and any subsequent court proceedings – will ultimately determine how Barbie Hsu’s estate will be distributed.
