The 2024 KBS Drama Awards air two days after plane crash, featuring controversial performance of ‘Happy Day’

The 2024 KBS Drama Awards aired on the afternoon of January 11. KBS held the ceremony on December 31, but due to the national mourning period following the Muan Airport disaster, the event was not broadcast in direct. Instead, the pre-recorded footage was aired. The ceremony was conducted by Jang Sung-kyu, Seohyun and Moon Sang-min.

Although the KBS Drama Awards took place just two days after the tragic plane crash, the event featured a celebratory spectacle rather than a somber atmosphere, which attracted attention. Singer Kim Da-hyun, wearing a bright white dress, performed the OST “Happy Day” from KBS weekend drama “Beauty and Mr. Romantic.”

Although the KBS Drama Awards were broadcast as a pre-recorded show, they were filmed on December 31, just two days after the plane crash, which led to some criticism of the timing. Additionally, considering the song’s title, “A Happy Day”, many felt that the song choice was somewhat inappropriate under the circumstances.

The Yuk Joong-wan Band also performed “Everything In The World” from the drama “Iron Family,” delivering a bright and lively performance. Although it would have been difficult to cancel the celebratory phase, there was some disappointment in choosing such an upbeat song for the event.
