Teenage brothers allegedly fathered on drugs steal $30,000 via mobile loans in South Korea

Two South Korean teenagers have been charged with drugging their father with sleeping pills, accessing his mobile banking while he was unconscious and fraudulently obtaining loans worth about 40 million won (about $30,000).

According to judicial authorities, the brothers committed the crime with the help of their older sister’s teenage boyfriend, before spending the money on gold and personal expenses.

On July 14, legal sources revealed that the Ulsan District Prosecutor’s Office charged a teenage girl, identified only as A, and her boyfriend, B, without detention on charges of robbery and computer fraud.

A’s younger brother was also referred to the juvenile division of the court on similar charges. The indictment alleges that in 2024 the three crushed prescription sleeping pills at the hospital and mixed the powder into their father’s coffee. After he lost consciousness, they allegedly unlocked his cellphone and used it to apply for bank loans totaling more than 30 million won.

Investigators say the suspects eventually withdrew about 40 million won from the victim’s accounts. The money would be used to buy gold, which they would then sell for cash. Investigators believe the proceeds were then spent on personal expenses, including skin care treatments and other individual purchases.

The case came to light after the father regained consciousness and realized that both his children were missing from home. Concerned, he filed a missing person’s report, prompting police to locate the brothers and boyfriend the next day.

During the initial police investigation, only the boyfriend was accused of computer fraud related to obtaining loans via his father’s cell phone. At the time, the boyfriend claimed that A had been responsible for giving sleeping pills to his father. However, A denied taking part in the crime, while his younger brother also insisted that his sister was not involved. The police concluded their investigation without conducting further investigations.

However, prosecutors reopened the case in November 2025 through an additional investigation.

According to the prosecution, a joint interrogation involving all three suspects produced a different account. The brothers reportedly admitted to crushing the prescription sleeping pills into a powder, mixing them with their father’s coffee and giving him the drink before carrying out the financial fraud.

Based on the new evidence, prosecutors concluded that knocking the father unconscious before accessing his cell phone and obtaining loans constituted robbery, leading to the formal indictment of A and her boyfriend. The younger brother, being a minor, was referred to the juvenile court for further proceedings.
