Taeyang recently talked about BIGBANG’s unforgettable performance at Coachella, including the surprising backstage story behind Daesung’s viral stage trot that sparked huge reactions online.
Appearing on the YouTube show Psycho Show via the Psick Univ channel, Taeyang reflected on the group’s Coachella appearance in April and revealed how overwhelming the in-person experience was.
The singer admitted that he was stunned by the huge crowd that gathered at the world-famous music festival.
“I couldn’t imagine there were so many people” Taeyang shared. “The fans had been waiting for us for so long and the moment we hit the stage, the applause completely exploded.”
According to the BIGBANG member, hearing the audience sing the opening track Bang Bang Bang out loud immediately made the entire performance feel worthwhile.
Taeyang also explained why he chose his solo hit Ringa Linga for the festival stage. He believed the energetic song would fit perfectly with the Coachella atmosphere and would be effective in energizing the audience – a decision that he said ultimately exceeded expectations.
However, the most talked about story was Daesung’s unexpected performance of the song Look at Me, Gwisoon, which quickly became one of the most viral moments of the festival.
Taeyang revealed that the group initially discussed whether performing a trot song at Coachella was a good idea.
“G-Dragon has a lot of energetic songs and I also have festival-friendly songs, but for Daesung we wondered if we should try trot music,” Taeyang explained.
The singer also admitted that he was personally worried at first.
“Honestly, I kept thinking, ‘Is it really okay to perform this song at Coachella?’ So I was quite nervous,” he confessed.
According to Taeyang, he was actually the one who suggested Daesung reconsider. However, Daesung reportedly remained completely confident in his decision.
“Daesung said that at Coachella, who else but him could perform trot music? He completely trusted himself and thought, ‘This is exactly who I am.’” Taeyang reminded.
The BIGBANG member also shared that international audiences reacted much better than expected. While many participants seemed surprised at first – and even experienced a certain culture shock – the audience eventually completely immersed themselves in the energetic and playful atmosphere of the stage.
Daesung’s unexpected trotting performance then became a hot topic on social media, with many fans praising BIGBANG for confidently bringing a unique Korean musical style to one of the world’s biggest music festivals.
