Kim Soo Hyun has denied allegations that he dated Kim Sae Ron while she was underage, claiming that their relationship only began after she became an adult. The actor later filed a criminal complaint against Kim Se Ui, the head of YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute, accusing him of defamation for statements related to the controversy. Kim Se Ui has since been indicted and detained on multiple charges, including criminal defamation, violating South Korea’s sexual violence laws, blackmail and attempted coercion.

Separately, Kim Soo Hyun was also involved in a civil lawsuit filed by one of his former advertisers. On July 8, a South Korean court recommended mediation during the second hearing of a damages lawsuit filed by outdoor brand Eider against gold medalist Kim Soo Hyun. Eider had initially asked for about 2.5 billion won (about $1.8 million) in damages, arguing that the controversy surrounding the actor had damaged the brand’s image.

During the last hearing, however, the company reportedly reduced the request to around 400 million won, moving the request from reputational damage to the repayment of the remaining compensation provided for in the sponsorship contract.

While it’s unclear when the actor will resume home entertainment projects, the overseas campaign marks his first confirmed professional activity since the controversy put much of his career on hold.
