Go Ah Sung appeared on the YouTube channel Yeouido Yuktwi Club in an episode of Center for women of the cityreleased on July 5, where she joined editor Kim Min Kyung and YouTuber Charles Enter for a discussion about their experiences as daughters.
During the conversation, Kim Min Kyung presented a viewer’s story about a woman whose father had died. Since there were no male relatives available, a man with whom she had once gone on a blind date would be listed as the chief mourner.
Charles Enter expressed disbelief, but Go Ah Sung responded that the situation was very real. “I experienced it myself.”
The actress explained that her mother passed away in 2021, and because her father was absent and she has two sisters, there was no close male relative to fill the traditional role. “My mother died. I don’t have a father and we are three sisters. When my mother died, everything became chaotic because there was no one to do the main mourning. There was no man.”
Go Ah Sung said the family initially turned to an uncle after being informed by people around them that a man should be seated as the main mourner during the funeral. Although they were not particularly close to him, they followed the recommendation in the confusion of funeral arrangements. “People kept telling us, ‘There has to be a man who acts as the head of the mourner.’ We thought this was what we had to do, so we asked our uncle to sit in that position.
However, the agreement lasted only one day. “After a day it was over. Finally we said, ‘Okay. We don’t need it.'”
In the end, Go Ah Sung revealed that she and her two sisters took responsibility for the funeral. Her heartfelt account attracted attention by highlighting the challenges some families still face due to long-standing funeral customs, particularly families without male family members.
