Brazilian midfielder Fabinho has unexpectedly gone viral after shocking images of him covered in blood during Brazil’s 2026 World Cup match against Morocco quickly spread on social media.
The incident occurred during Brazil’s debut match against Morocco at MetLife Stadium in the United States on June 13. Fabinho entered the game at half-time, replacing Casemiro, but immediately found himself the center of attention due to an unusual moment on the pitch.
In the 63rd minute, cameras caught the former Liverpool midfielder walking towards the touchline with blood visibly dripping around his mouth. It is unclear exactly when Fabinho suffered the injury, but medical staff rushed onto the pitch to assist the 32-year-old.
The images that followed showed bloodstains on Fabinho’s iconic yellow Brazil shirt. Medical staff cleaned his face, changed his shirt and put cotton wool in his nose to stop the bleeding before allowing him to continue playing.
Under football rules, any player who is bleeding must leave the field temporarily for treatment before being allowed to return by the referee. Although Fabinho initially appeared frustrated that Brazil had to briefly play with one less player, he soon regained his composure and was seen smiling as he walked towards the touchline.
It was this surprisingly relaxed expression, combined with his blood-covered face, that quickly turned Fabinho into an online celebrity.
One social media user joked, “Fabinho seems to have become the Joker.”
Another wrote, “He would be the perfect vampire.”
A third fan jokingly commented: “His mouth is covered in blood and he is still smiling. Did Fabinho actually say: ‘Why so serious?'”
Many spectators also described the atmosphere at MetLife Stadium as “real battlefield”, with Brazil and Morocco engaged in an intensely physical contest throughout the match.
After receiving treatment, Fabinho returned to the pitch and resumed playing without problems. The incident highlighted the fierce and hard-fought nature of the meeting between the two sides.
On the football side, Morocco surprised Brazil by opening the scoring in the 21st minute with Ismael Saibari. Brazil equalized in the 32nd minute thanks to a brilliant finish from Vinicius Junior.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti introduced Fabinho at the start of the second half in place of Casemiro to strengthen the midfield after Brazil struggled against Morocco’s aggressive pressing system. The Saudi Pro League midfielder was praised for bringing more stability to the center of the pitch and making several key defensive interventions.
However, Brazil failed to find the winning goal in the remaining minutes. Ultimately, the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw in the opening match of Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
