Sibling duo AKMU have finally addressed the real reason behind their departure from YG Entertainment after more than a decade, putting an end to speculation about their decision.
During a recent appearance on a YouTube talk show, members Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Su-hyun shared candid insights into their journey, showing off their signature sibling chemistry as they discussed their career transition. When asked why they chose to start their own label, Lee Chan-hyuk simply replied, “It’s about time.”
The conversation took a lighthearted turn when the host jokingly called their departure a “betrayal,” prompting Lee Chan-hyuk to laugh awkwardly before clarifying the situation. He pointed out that the duo had even once renewed their contract with YG Entertainment and expressed deep gratitude for everything they had learned during their time there.
However, he explained that as his role in music production expanded, his artistic identity became more defined. “As my production scope grew, my musical color became lighter. The more detailed my preferences became, the more I felt a separation between the company’s direction and my own,” he said.

Importantly, Lee Chan-hyuk stressed that their departure was fully supported by the company. According to him, YG Entertainment recognized the duo’s growth and encouraged their independence, saying that AKMU seemed capable of thriving on its own. “It’s the opposite of betrayal,” he added firmly.
After their departure in December, after 12 years with YG, AKMU founded their own independent label “Inspiration Source” and made their return with their fourth album released on April 7. The move marks a new chapter for the duo, signaling greater creative freedom while maintaining the musical identity that has defined their career.
