aespa’s Giselle has become the center of online debate after appearing in a controversial outfit during a recent stage performance.
The singer attracted more attention after aespa’s performance of “WDA” on the KBS music program Music Bank on May 15th.
Shortly after the broadcast aired, videos and screenshots of Giselle’s stage quickly spread across online communities, YouTube Shorts, and Korean forums.
Most criticism focused on the black leather shorts worn by the idol during the performance. The style, created by fashion brand Namilia, featured a daring low-rise construction that resembled exposed string underwear details and reportedly retails for around $189.
Giselle paired the piece with a skintight Jean Paul Gaultier jumpsuit decorated with anatomical bone-print graphics.
However, many viewers argued that the combination of both pieces created an uncomfortable visual illusion. Some viewers felt that the style made it appear as if the dress had slipped too far down, causing what they described as an embarrassing and inappropriate image for a national television broadcast.
Several viewers also commented that the body print design on the leotard unintentionally emphasized certain body contours too much, with some critics even comparing the style to a “fashion mistake” rather than an art scene concept.
As online criticism intensified, many netizens blamed aespa’s styling team for selecting an outfit they felt was unsuitable for a public television music show.
Comments included reactions such as: “I really don’t understand what the designer was thinking,” “It doesn’t look fashionable, it’s just uncomfortable” AND “This is one of the strangest K-pop stage outfits I’ve ever seen.”
Despite the negative reaction, others defended Giselle and her team, claiming the controversy was overblown.
Some fans pointed out that the idol was still completely covered underneath by a bodysuit and didn’t actually reveal anything inappropriate. Others argued that bold, experimental style has long been common in global performance fashion, and that the outfit only appeared controversial because of the camera angles and optical illusions.

Many fans have also pointed out that, given aespa’s current level of success and influence, the members likely have significant input regarding their personal style and onstage image. For this reason, some netizens argued that placing all the blame solely on the designer was unfair.
The ongoing debate over Giselle’s outfit once again highlights how theatrical K-pop fashion continues to divide public opinion.
While some viewers appreciate bold concepts and individuality, others still expect idols to maintain more low-key style choices, especially during broadcasts of mainstream television programs.
