According to Channel A, a man in his 40s was arrested on robbery and assault charges after allegedly breaking into Kim Gyu-ri’s residence around 9pm on May 20 in an attempted robbery.
Reports stated that another woman living in the house discovered the intruder during the incident. The suspect reportedly fled the scene, but during the confrontation, Kim Gyu-ri’s roommate sustained injuries.
The suspect later turned himself in about three hours after the crime in Hwagok-dong, Seoul. Police are currently investigating whether premeditated planning is involved in the case and are reportedly examining the possibility of applying for a detention warrant.
The incident attracted further attention because Kim Gyu-ri previously revealed parts of her traditional Korean hanok residence on KBS2’s variety program. During the broadcast, the actress – who also works as a Korean painter – showed off the hanok courtyard, interior spaces and personal art studio.
The case reignited concerns about celebrities’ domestic exposure through media appearances after several similar incidents involving Korean artists.
Last year, Nana was also the victim of a violent home invasion after a man allegedly entered her home using a ladder and threatened her and her mother with a gun. The suspect in that case was later arrested and remains involved in an ongoing appeals process.
Kim Gyu-ri is also widely known as one of the victims of South Korea’s previous cultural blacklist controversy under the Lee Myung-bak administration. In 2024, after an eight-year legal battle involving several artists and entertainers, the actress officially obtained compensation from the state after the National Intelligence Service withdrew its final appeal.
Following the ruling, Kim Gyu-ri wrote on social media, “I just want to stop hurting now.”
The latest incident has sparked renewed discussion in South Korea over celebrity privacy, home security and the risks associated with publicly revealing personal residences through television and social media.
