A Russian court sentences a woman for writing an LGBTQ+ fanfiction about stray children

A Russian photographer has reportedly been sentenced to hard labor after being accused of writing online fanfiction involving Stray children.

Photographer Alexandra Kuzyk was sentenced to 18 months of hard labor after authorities accused her of producing illegal pornography through a fanfiction story describing a homosexual relationship.

The story would be uploaded online in 2022. The case began after a woman allegedly discovered fanfiction on her minor daughter’s device and filed a police report. LGBT health organization Parni+ later said the work was based on members of Stray children.

Kuzyk reportedly admitted guilt during the trial and described writing fanfiction as a long-standing hobby. Prosecutors had initially asked for a four-year prison sentence, but the court instead ordered compulsory work while withholding 10% of his earnings from the state.

The case has attracted attention amid Russia’s growing crackdown on LGBT content. In 2022, the country expanded the ban on the so-called LGBT “propaganda”. and enforcement has intensified since then. Authorities have also reportedly targeted websites hosting amateur fiction and manga platforms accused of distributing LGBT-themed material.

Last year, Russian-language manga platform MangaLIB was fined under the same rules, with additional fines given to the company’s staff members.
