Never before have three BLACKPINK members released products at the same time as they have in recent days. This created an exciting competition. BLACKPINK is entering a new era where the members are finding their individual colors and shaping their distinct personalities more clearly in the international music market. Since late last year, members have begun to expand their influence by focusing more on individual activities rather than group work.
The battle between Lisa, Jennie and Rosé
Leading the way is the youngest, Lisa. Lisa founded her own company called LLOUD and released three music products consecutively: Rockstars, New womanAND Floor in the moonlight. Each song has a different style and, through them, Lisa demonstrates that she aims for innovation, challenging herself with various musical genres. As the first member to have a solo product and release three MVs, Lisa has had the most media exposure among all BLACKPINK members since the group left YG.
She performed at the Global Citizen Festival in New York in late September. Previously, she performed at the 2024 MTV VMAs and won the Best K-pop award for the song Rockstars. Most recently, Lisa performed at the 2024 Victoria’s Secret fashion show, continuing to attract major attention with her bold style and confident, eye-catching performance.
However, in Lisa’s case, media exposure did not go hand in hand with success. On the contrary, many of his appearances have attracted considerable controversy, which has somewhat tarnished his reputation as a top star. The fact that Lisa showed signs of lip-syncing and gave disappointing performances, as judged by many international media, was a serious blow to her solo career, which is only just beginning.
Putting the controversy aside, Lisa released the song on October 4th Floor in the moonlight. Unlike the two songs with strong feminist messages—Rockstars AND New woman—Floor in the moonlight is a romantic nu-disco and dance-pop love ballad believed to be about her relationship with her French boyfriend. Fans were eagerly waiting for this release, but she faced competition from fellow BLACKPINK members Jennie and Rosé. On the Billboard Global 200 chart, Floor in the moonlight it reached number 37 at midday on October 22, lower than Rockstars (grade 4) e New woman (ranking 15).
Jennie has officially released her solo song Mantras on October 11th. On the day of its release, Mantras ranked No. 5 on Spotify’s daily global top songs chart, breaking the record Jennie had previously set.
According to Newsis, it also topped the real-time charts on Bugs, a major national music site, and the Top Songs chart on iTunes in 57 countries/regions, including the United States, Brazil, Singapore, the Philippines and Mexico. Notably, Jennie became the first female K-pop solo artist to top the iTunes Top Song chart in the United States this year. The song also rose to 3rd place on the Melon chart.
In addition to these measurable results, the message embedded in the song has received positive feedback from many fans. Jennie was released Mantras on International Day of the Girl, October 11, to project confidence and independence. True to the lyrics, Jennie also proudly shone on stage in her own unique way.
The winner is…
Rosé released her new solo song just a week after Jennie. Rosé’s new solo digital single APP premiered on October 18, starring Bruno Mars. This song is part of his first full solo album, Rosiewhose release is scheduled for December. Rosé took charge of writing the lyrics and composing this song. Pop star Bruno Mars not only collaborated and lent his voice, but also appeared in the MV, attracting attention.
This song topped Melon’s TOP 100 music chart on October 19, one day after its release, and held the top spot for three consecutive days. Not only has it dominated domestic music platforms, but it has also topped major global music charts, including Spotify in the US, as of October 22.
According to Newsen, Rosé has achieved the most notable success among the three BLACKPINK members who recently released solo projects. On Spotify’s global top songs chart by noon on October 22, APP ranked 1st, Mantras 9th e Floor in the moonlight 13. At the same time, on Melon, Korea’s largest music platform, APP also occupied the first place, followed by Mantras at 3, while Floor in the moonlight did not make it to the top 100. With these results, APP it is expected to reach a high position on the Billboard Hot 100 soon.
In terms of opinions, APP garnered over 83 million views in its first four days, Mantras accumulated 52 million in 11 days, and Floor in the moonlight it had a modest 16.6 million in 13 days. However, the lower number for Floor in the moonlight it’s understandable, given that the song’s video is a performance clip rather than an official MV.
“I poured blood, sweat and tears into this album,” Rosé told fans earlier this month when announcing the release of her first solo album. However, there is no sign of a struggle APP. Instead, the song is an energetic, explosive track, full of vibrant energy, from the powerful pop-rock beat to the addictive chorus. The concept of the song is inspired by Apartmenta famous drinking game in Korea. Its catchy, simple nature and adaptation to the trend-oriented music landscape in short videos have led to APPit’s the big hit, even though Rosé didn’t do much promotion.
Jisoo is the only member who hasn’t released her own music yet this year. She took a different path from her teammates, focusing on developing her career as an actress rather than a singer.
