The heartbreaking story of MBC’s “PUBG Couple” continues as the husband finally holds a proper memorial service for his late wife 35 days after her death, having initially been unable to afford a traditional funeral due to financial difficulties.
The emotional update will air on the July 20 episode of MBC’s Oh Eun-young Report – Love Again: The Aftermath, revisiting the family whose story deeply moved viewers earlier this year.
In the couple’s previous appearance, the husband took on the role of primary caregiver while his wife battled terminal stomach cancer. After her condition rapidly worsened, she died, leaving behind her husband and their two young children, a five-year-old and a one-year-old. Since then the father has raised both children alone.
The new episode follows the family’s first visit to their mother’s columbarium after her death. Believing they were simply going to the hospital, the eldest son innocently asked, “Are we at the hospital? Let’s run to the hospital. This is not Mommy’s hospital.”
When the child finally found himself in front of his mother’s memorial photo, his father gently explained, “Mom was very ill. She went to heaven so she wouldn’t suffer anymore.” Unable to fully understand the loss, the child burst into tears, asking, “Why did Mommy go to heaven? What should I do without Mommy? I miss her.”
Watching his son cry, the father admitted the moment seemed unbearable. “I felt like my heart had been torn apart. I felt like I had given my son another kind of pain.”
The episode also reveals that the family was forced to hold a simple funeral without a memorial hall immediately after his wife’s death because they could not afford the expenses.
Her husband said he struggled to accept her death. “I never felt like I had sent her away. I thought I had cried enough, but the sadness never went away.” The failure to give a proper farewell to his wife remained one of his greatest regrets.
Thirty-five days after her death, and on what would have been her 31st birthday, her husband finally showed up again as the chief mourner to hold a proper memorial service.
As friends and family gathered to pay their respects, he found comfort in their presence. “It was the first time so many people held my hand and comforted me face to face. That’s when I realized that grief can slowly heal through other people.”
After the ceremony, he had his first real meal since losing his wife. Overcome with emotion as he ate the funeral meal, he tearfully remarked, “Why does it taste so good? I’m ashamed to say.”
