PO Reflects on Acting Criticisms and Wrong Controversies: “Acting Gives Me the Strength to Keep Going”

Recently, PO gave an interview at a bar in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, to discuss his role in the Netflix series I’ll teach you a lesson.

Netflix’s I’ll teach you a lessondirected by Hong Jong-chan, follows the courageous efforts of the Educational Rights Protection Bureau as it works to restore order in schools while defending victims. PO plays Bong Geun-dae, a brilliant office administrative officer.

Although PO first became known to the public through variety shows and as a member of the K-pop group Block B, his journey as an actor has not always been easy.

After his appearance in the 2019 tvN drama Hotel Della Lunahe faced criticism regarding his facial expressions, delivery of lines and pronunciation. Also in subsequent projects, including the 2024 SBS drama Good partnersome viewers continued to argue that his acting had not improved significantly, while others wondered if he had been wrong.

Despite the criticism, PO never lost his love for acting.

“I think I’ve always genuinely loved cinema, acting and theatre, ever since I was young,” he said. “This passion is a great driving force for me. I also hope that through acting more and more people will become interested and come to see our theater productions.”

Currently running his own theater company, PO revealed that he is preparing an original show that is scheduled to premiere in Seoul’s Daehangno theater district around December this year.

He added it I’ll teach you a lesson holds a particularly special place in his career.

“*I’ll teach you a lesson it’s the project that gave me self-confidence,”* he shared. “There are still a lot of things I wish I could have done better, and I still feel like I have a lot to improve on. But this is the project that made me feel like I can continue to pursue this profession.”

He continued, “For a long time I just focused on how much I missed it and how much I needed to work harder. When someone believes in you, it creates a kind of synergy. For me, I’ll teach you a lesson it was the project that gave me that belief and courage.

When asked what types of roles he hopes to take on in the future, PO explained that he wants to play more complex personalities.

“I have a sharp and sensitive side in me,” he said. “But rather than presenting these traits in an obvious or forced way, I would like to express them in a natural and subtle way.”

He concluded by saying that creating believable character growth remains one of his greatest goals as an actor.

“I think my challenge for the future is to learn how to represent a character’s transformation in a convincing way,” he said, underlining his determination to continue growing both on screen and on stage.
