A unique conceptual drama is preparing to captivate viewers: SBS’s upcoming series My Royal Nemesis, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, is scheduled to premiere on May 8. Even before its release, the drama attracted attention with its surprising concept and visually compelling cast fixed cuts.
My Royal Nemesis tells the story of Shin Seo Ri (Lim Ji Yeon), an unknown actress who turns “evil” after being possessed by the spirit of a notorious Joseon-era villain, and Cha Se Gye (Heo Nam Jun), a ruthless chaebol heir often described as a “monster created by capitalism.” Their relationship unfolds as a tense, war-like romance. The drama is directed by Han Tae Seop, known for Hot Stove League and Cheer Up, and written by first-time screenwriter Kang Hyun Joo, raising expectations for a new synergy.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the drama is its unique blend of two contrasting timelines: the Joseon Dynasty and 21st-century South Korea. Lim Ji Yeon’s character Shin Seo Ri is possessed by the spirit of Kang Dan Sim, a legendary villain who once rose from low status to a powerful royal consort. Her awakening in the body of a struggling modern actress sets the stage for unpredictable developments and drives the central narrative.
Photos just released on April 15 captured the moment this “bad Joseon” arrives in the modern world. Lim Ji Yeon’s wide-eyed and bewildered expression as she faces an unfamiliar environment adds both humor and intrigue. Momentarily stripped of her evil aura, her confusion in the face of modern life sparks curiosity about how she will adapt.
The previously revealed posters of the duo also caused a stir. The images show Kang Dan Sim and Cha Se Gye facing each other in the same space but across different timelines. The mirror composition between 18th century Joseon and modern Korea adds to the visual appeal while amplifying the subtle tension between the two characters. The tagline, “A villain meets a new world,” suggests a plot that goes beyond simple romance, promising unpredictable twists.
Lim Ji Yeon, who first gained recognition through the film Obsessed, has built a diverse career with dramas such as High Society. She particularly impressed audiences with her chilling villain performance as Park Yeon Jin in the Netflix series The Glory. Having also demonstrated depth in historical dramas such as The Tale of Lady Ok, she is expected to deliver another transformative performance balancing both period and modern acting in this new role.
Heo Nam Jun is also expected to increase his presence through this project. Known for his roles in Sweet Home, Your Honor and One Hundred Memories, he has steadily built a strong filmography. With his charismatic image, he is quick to portray Cha Se Gye as a cold and calculating third-generation chaebol.
As Shin Seo Ri, imbued with the spirit of a Joseon villain, enters Cha Se Gye’s efficiency-oriented world, unexpected cracks begin to form. The clash between two characters shaped by completely different eras is expected to be one of the highlights of the drama.

Above all, the anticipation is high for the “evil synergy” between the two protagonists. The story of two infamous figures from different eras colliding in one world, and the emotional evolution that follows, promises a new take on romance.
Even before its premiere, My Royal Nemesis has left a strong impression through its teasers and visuals. With its narrative spanning different eras, character transformations and unpredictable plot, expectations are high for the new “world” it will bring to viewers.
SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama, My Royal Nemesis, will premiere on May 8 at 9.50pm.
