Legendary C-Pop star faces ‘Past Her Prime’ criticism after concert performance sparks debate

During the show, Taiwanese singer and actress Angela Chang performed her classic hit “Aurora,” but several audience members said she sounded off-key from the opening bars. Clips from the stage spread quickly on Chinese social media, with some netizens harshly comparing her voice to “a tangled cassette tape.”

Reactions online were divided. Some viewers said the backing track remained in the original key while Angela’s voice sounded noticeably lower. Others who said they were at the scene also said the camp’s problem was evident from the start. One comment read: “This isn’t the first time he’s sung off-key.” Another wrote: “The tone was really wrong from the beginning of ‘Aurora’.”

Many fans defended her, however. Some have argued that the problem could stem from audio equipment, in-ear monitor problems, auto-tune settings, or his health condition. Others said the event was a joint commercial concert, not his solo concert, so the level of preparation may not have been the same. The controversy once again placed Angela Chang under public scrutiny. After more than 20 years in entertainment, nearly every appearance she makes still sparks discussion about her voice, appearance, career and personal life.

Angela Chang, born in 1982, was once known as a “little diva”, “showbiz princess” and a youth icon of Asian entertainment in the early 2000s. She rose to fame with dramas such as “MVP Valentine” and “At The Dolphin Bay”, then built a successful music career with albums such as “Over The Rainbow”, “Aurora” and “Pandora”.

Her peak years were between 2006 and 2008, most notably with the hit song “Invisible Wings,” which became one of the most memorable songs of her career and even helped her join the Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay. However, Angela’s career later faced major setbacks, including health problems, contract disputes, and painful family scandals. In 2009, he publicly cut ties with his family after accusing his mother of taking around TWD100 million from his savings.

After years of controversy, Angela has slowly rebuilt her career, especially after appearing in “Singer 2018.” She also founded her own company with her sister and continued to work actively in mainland China. Now in her 40s, Angela still gives concerts, appears on television shows and remains known for her elaborate stage outfits. However, one controversial performance is enough to bring back critics who call her “past her prime” or question whether her abilities have diminished.

Yet, looking back over her 20-year journey, Angela Chang remains one of the rare C-pop stars who have survived career setbacks, family scandals, public criticism and industry changes and still continue to stand on stage.
