Trot singer Jang Yoon Jung has broken her silence after her biological mother was accused of using her name in an alleged investment fraud scheme.
On June 30, JTBC’s investigative program “Crime Chief” (also known as Case manager) broadcast a report titled “Famous Singer’s Mother in Widespread Fraud Scheme.” The broadcast focused on the allegations against Jang Yoon Jung’s mother, identified only by her last name, Yook.
According to the report, Yook approached a woman in her 60s after meeting her at a jjimjilbang, or Korean sauna, AllKPop reported.
Investments related to the “Miss Trot” audition program, where Jang Yoon Jung appeared, could reportedly bring big profits. The victim said she trusted Yook because he repeatedly mentioned his famous daughter and said they had reunited after years of conflict.
The report also stated that Yook allegedly used two cell phones to create fake KakaoTalk conversations, making it appear that he was exchanging messages directly with Jang Yoon Jung. Authorities said the victim handed over tens of millions of won as investment money.
The case came to light after the victim’s daughter noticed suspicious behavior and reported it to the police. Investigators then discovered another alleged victim who had reportedly suffered a similar scam and had already filed a criminal complaint.
Jang Yoon Jung denies the connection
As the story spread online, Jang Yoon Jung responded via the program to avoid further misunderstandings and possible new victims.
“I had no contact with my mother,” the singer said.
A representative for Jang Yoon Jung also explained that she has been estranged from her mother for many years and has consistently avoided speaking publicly about family matters. The representative added that Yook had previously attempted to contact the singer through acquaintances, but Jang Yoon Jung did not respond.
The whistleblower in the case reportedly emphasized that the singer herself was not involved in the alleged fraud and should be considered a victim of the situation.
The police are continuing their investigations. Reports say authorities have been trying to confirm Yook’s whereabouts after contact with her was reportedly lost earlier this year.
The case also brought renewed attention to Jang Yoon Jung’s long and painful family conflict.
According to SportsChosun, in 2013, before her marriage, she revealed on the talk show “Healing Camp, Aren’t You Happy” that she discovered her earnings had disappeared during her parents’ divorce process, leaving her with huge debts. His mother and younger brother denied the claims at the time, resulting in years of public controversy and lawsuits.
