However, statements from airport officials suggest the situation may have been misunderstood, leading many fans to wonder whether the K-pop star was unfairly singled out.
The discussion began after videos emerged showing Jang Wonyoung at Gimpo International Airport on May 30 before departing for Shanghai. During the identity verification process, the singer briefly lowered her mask and raised her hat instead of taking them off completely. Some online commentators argued that this behavior violated security procedures and suggested that he may have received preferential treatment due to his celebrity status.
Further allegations circulated online that he handed over his passport with one hand and showed an indifferent attitude towards airport staff. However, videos shot from different angles appeared to contradict those accusations, showing Jang Wonyoung handing over his passport with both hands and bowing politely after the interaction.
As criticism grew, the Korea Airports Corporation addressed the issue directly. According to the organization, passengers are verbally asked to remove objects that hinder facial identification. However, staff members have the discretion to determine whether further removal is necessary if they can already verify a passenger’s identity by comparing their photo identification.
An airport representative said Jang Wonyoung lowered his mask twice during the process and complied with the screening procedure. Officials stressed that there was no requirement for her to completely remove her hat or mask if her identity could be confirmed.
The debate intensified after viewers pointed out that another passenger visible in the same footage appeared to be undergoing a similar identity check. The woman also reportedly kept her hat on and lowered her mask only temporarily to verify her identity. This observation led many supporters to argue that the criticism directed at Jang Wonyoung stemmed from his celebrity status rather than any actual violation of airport procedures.
The controversy has reignited discussions about the intense scrutiny faced by high-profile celebrities, particularly female idols. Supporters argue that actions considered normal for ordinary travelers often become major controversies when performed by public figures.
