Hyoyeon Reflects on Nearly 20 Years with Girls’ Generation: “I Wondered How Long I Could Keep Living Like This”

Girls’ Generation member Hyoyeon has openly spoken about the emotional struggles and personal growth she has experienced after nearly two decades in the entertainment industry.

According to a preview from MBC Save me! Housesairing on July 16, Hyoyeon will join Lee Chae Young, Yang Se Chan and Ahn Jae Hyun in a special episode that will explore the homes and lifestyles of single women in their 40s and 50s who have embraced independent living.

Before the tour began, Hyoyeon surprised the cast by sharing deeply personal reflections on her career and mindset. The singer revealed that she has gradually learned to let go of many of the burdens she once carried.

“I think I let go a lot.” Hyoyeon admitted. “There were times when I felt suffocated and found myself wondering how much longer I could continue to live like this.”

Her candid confession quickly gained attention, as it marked one of the rare occasions she has spoken publicly about her emotional journey since debuting Girls’ Generation nearly 19 years ago.

Lee Chae Young, who is now in her ninth year as an entertainer, also shared her perspective with humor. “I let things go since the beginning of my debut, so now I regret it a little,” he joked, lightening the mood with a fun performance that had everyone in the studio laughing.

As one of the industry’s veteran idols, Hyoyeon also offered practical advice to younger artists facing the challenges of K-pop life. His comments reportedly prompted host Jang Dong Min to make a cryptic remark, adding even more energy to the discussion.

In addition to conversations about their careers, the episode showcases homes that reflect the unique personalities and lifestyles of single, middle-aged women. Kim Sook, often considered a role model for independent urban women, continues to share the joys of living alone. Meanwhile, Hyoyeon, who still lives in a dormitory, and Lee Chae Young, who has been living independently for about two years, expressed excitement about experimenting with different living environments.

One of the first houses featured belongs to two sisters who live along the Han River in Seoul’s Gwangjin district. As guests entered, they were fascinated by the bookcases that covered the living room walls. Yang Se Chan jokingly remarked, “Looking at the four of us, it doesn’t look like any of us have read a book.” His comment drew immediate reactions from Ahn Jae Hyun and Hyoyeon, who both reminded him that they published the books themselves, making for one of the funniest moments of the episode.
