A disturbing beauty standard is rapidly spreading in Korean entertainment, the so-called “thin as a bone” trend, referring to an extremely slim figure in which the bones are visibly prominent.
In the past, a toned and healthy physique was widely admired. Today, however, an extreme diet that emphasizes collarbones and upper body lines has increasingly become an aspirational look. This change has sparked growing concern among fans and industry observers.
Among K-pop idols, noticeable weight changes have become a frequent topic of discussion. Aespa’s Giselle recently appeared significantly thinner than before, raising speculation about her health. Similarly, tripleS’ Chaewon attracted attention during a performance where her ribs were visibly defined, leading to rumors of an eating disorder claims she later addressed it directly, claiming to be in the healthiest condition of her life. Meanwhile, IVE’s Liz continues to be highlighted as part of all this “thin as a bone” trend.
This model extends beyond idols to actresses as well. Kim Ji Won recently made headlines after appearing noticeably slimmer at an overseas event, with her collarbones and upper body looking particularly gaunt. Veteran actresses Go Hyun Jung and Ha Ji Won have also raised concerns due to sudden weight loss or visibly reduced muscle tone. What was once considered a negative descriptor it is now repeatedly consumed as an ideal of beauty, a development that many find troubling.

Amid this atmosphere, Moon Geun Young’s appearance in tvN’s preview “Your Block Quiz” resonated deeply with viewers.
After enduring a major health crisis in 2017 due to acute compartment syndrome, which required four surgeries, she returned looking noticeably calmer and healthier. Reflecting on her past, she recalled how close she was to a critical situation where she might have begun tissue necrosis after missing the golden window of treatment.
However, instead of focusing on the difficulties, he shared a message of growth: “Maybe as my body grew, my heart grew too.”

Her words reflect a sense of acceptance and emotional maturity, offering a stark contrast to the industry’s current obsession with extreme thinness. She also expressed optimism for the future, saying she believes she will be able to enjoy what lies ahead even more.
In a time when “thin as a bone” bodies are increasingly idealized, Moon Geun Young’s quiet confidence and recovery tell a different story that reminds audiences that true beauty lies in health, resilience and self-acceptance, not extremes.
