BTS’s RM has become the center of controversy following allegations of smoking in a non-smoking area during a recent visit to Japan.
According to what was reported by the Japanese weekly Weekly Bunshun, RM was seen smoking in the corridor of a building after attending the BTS concert at the Tokyo Dome.
The photos released by the newspaper show him holding a cigarette while chatting with some acquaintances. The problem stems from the fact that the location was reportedly a non-smoking area, with no separate smoking areas within the building.
The report also claims that despite warnings from staff, RM and his group continued to smoke in the corridor.
Additionally, allegations of improper disposal of cigarette butts attracted criticism, with claims that a member of staff should have cleaned up the area afterwards. Images of an employee kneeling to clean the floor reportedly intensified the public reaction.
The revised Japanese Health Promotion Law (which came into effect in April 2020) strictly bans smoking in indoor public spaces such as restaurants and offices.

Violations may result in fines of up to:
- ¥300,000 for individuals
- ¥500,000 for facility managers
Given these similar regulations and laws in South Korea, critics argue that such behavior is particularly troubling for a global figure like RM.
The controversy gained even more attention due to RM’s long-standing reputation. Known for his thoughtful speeches and responsible image, he was often praised as a “role model” idol.
His past remarks, including reflections on personal growth and humility, have contributed to his positive public perception, making the current accusations particularly jarring for fans and observers.
BigHit Music faced scrutiny over its initial response. Instead of issuing a clear statement or apology, the agency reportedly said: “We are aware of the situation, but since the photos were taken by a paparazzi site, we ask national media to refrain from reporting.”
The lack of a definitive position or clarification has left many questioning the agency’s handling of the matter.

As the situation evolves, public opinion remains divided: Some criticize the alleged behavior as inappropriate for a global artist, others question the reliability and intent of the tabloid reports.
Without official confirmation or a detailed response, the controversy continues to generate debate in online communities.
