Actor Song Jae-rim’s sudden passing casts a spotlight on his final months

The entertainment world was rocked on November 12 by the sudden death of beloved actor Song Jae-rim, who was found dead in his home in Seoul at the age of 39. News of his passing brought attention to the final months of his life and career, which were marked by notable achievements and a high-profile stage role.

Song Jae-rim, who debuted in 2009, gained wide recognition for his performances in the drama The Moon embracing the Sun (2012) and the variety show We got married (2014). His career has spanned film, television and theatre, making him a versatile and much-loved figure in the industry.

Most recently, Song starred in the musical The Rose of Versailleswhich took place from July to October. Playing the role of Florian Victor Clément de Girodel, a character known for his loyalty and his confession of love to the protagonist, Song captivated the audience with his strong stage presence. The role represented a new challenge for Song, and his co-star, actress Lisa, commented during promotions that she was impressed with his natural abilities, saying, “He did so well that I couldn’t believe he was the his first musical”.

In August, while promoting The Rose of Versailles, Song appeared on MBC FM4U’s Good Morning FM, where he shared his personal interests and discussed his passion for fragrance making and butchery, hobbies he jokingly called “training for future marriage.” His playful comments showed off his usual sense of humor, endearing him even more to fans.

After the musical’s conclusion, Song was reportedly looking forward to taking on other projects, including the release of his latest film, Plunge: The Man Whose Business Failed, directed by Hyun Hae-ri. The film, now considered his final work, will be released in early 2025 and will have a special poignancy for fans and colleagues.

A friend who had planned to meet Song for lunch discovered her body at her home. Police said there were no signs of foul play and a note was found at the scene. Song’s sudden departure left fans and colleagues alike in mourning. Condolence messages poured in, with close friends like Hong Seok-cheon and Park Ho-san expressing their sadness on social media, remembering Song’s kindness and warmth.

Song’s funeral service will be held at Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul, with the procession scheduled for Nov. 14.
