Soy’s unexpected journey: almost a member of SES, now leader of an indie band

Soy spent her childhood moving around due to her father’s diplomatic career. He shared, “I had a strong sense of loneliness because I didn’t belong anywhere and I was always ready to leave. Music became my only comfort in those moments.”

Interestingly, his path to broadcasting was a series of coincidences. Simply enjoying music, Soy regularly went to a department store to watch MTV. One day, her mother suggested that she audition for the VJ audition for MTV Korea.

Following her mother’s advice, Soy auditioned and had the opportunity to go on stage for a short time in 1994. However, her television career was cut short when her father received a new assignment in the United States, requiring the family to move to Los Angeles.

An unexpected visit occurred there. Lee Soo Man, founder of SM Entertainment, and producer Yoo Young Jin came to Soy’s home in Los Angeles to meet her sister, who previously appeared on the radio show “Starry Night.” The sister, however, was too shy and avoided the meeting. Instead, Lee Soo Man noticed Soy and saw potential in her. He intended to cast her in a multinational girl group he was planning, which would later become SES. At the time, the group was still in its formative stages, with members Eugene, Shoo and Bada yet to be finalized.

Although Soy began preparing for SES with a curiosity about music, his academic priorities remained. He admitted, “I had no intention of debuting as a singer. I signed up out of curiosity, but it was too demanding to combine my studies for university admission.”

Ultimately, after a month of training, Soy decided to focus on his education. She entered Korea University to study Chinese language and literature, but later returned to the entertainment industry by passing an audition for TTMa.

After 2 years, feeling that TTMa’s public image was not in line with her, Soy chose to leave the group. He founded the indie band Raspberry Field in 2007 and released new music in June this year.
