Singer and musical actor Kim Junsu appeared on MBC’s entertainment program “Radio Star” and shared a series of stories. This broadcast was decorated as a “Short Form Star K” special, and Kim Junsu spoke honestly about his musical acting career and personal experience
Recalling his days with SM Entertainment’s K-pop boy group TVXQ (also known as DBSK), Kim Junsu recounted how the group became the first Asian boy group to top Japan’s Oricon chart and how they achieved numerous awards in Korea.
Despite their success, however, he admitted that he felt a sense of crisis when BIGBANG emerged as a strong competitor.
“One day, we decided to focus on promoting in Japan, so we only promoted in Japan for about two years, and took a break in Korea. That’s when BIGBANG appeared. At first we didn’t feel so burdened by the fact that our rivals kept changing, but when I first saw their “Lies” stage, I thought it was cool from our point of view too. We had sharp choreography, but BIGBANG was so free and amazing. I felt a sense of crisis for the first time when I saw it.”the singer-actor admitted.
This eventually led to the release of TVXQ’s hit song “Mirotic”, and according to Junsu, TVXQ should have promoted themselves more in Japan, but ended up returning to Korea early.
One of the most personal moments came when Kim Junsu explained how, despite his enormous financial success as a musical actor, people still looked at him with pity when he wasn’t actively appearing on TV. At one point he owned 15 supercars, leading to him being nicknamed “Rich Oppa”.
He explained: “Even though my income increased 100 times, people still looked at me with pity because I wasn’t on TV. It bothered me and I felt the need to show off my wealth. But eventually, people started recognizing me for my work and I realized that I no longer needed to flaunt material things.”
He jokingly said he once purchased a 24-karat gold-plated bed, the same model used by Donald Trump. However, he stressed that he has since reduced his car collection to three and no longer indulges in such extravagant purchases.
