Celebrity scandals can often result in a career being put on hold or completely ended, i.e. “cancelled”. This is even more true when the scandal involves the commission of a crime of any kind.

This is true for the Chinese actress Fan Bingbing.
Fan Bingbing started in the late 1990s, gaining fame with his role in the film Cell phone.
Over the course of her long career, the actress has appeared in numerous projects, both domestic and foreign X-Men: Days of Future Past. Her fame and presence have also earned her numerous campaigns with fashion brands and first place in the Forbes China Celebrity 100 in 2013.
However, his fame took a hit in 2018 after a tax scandal rocked his career.
Fan Bingbing was investigated for tax fraud for allegedly underreporting amounts than she actually paid. After disappearing for several months, Fan Bingbing returned with an apology and agreed to pay fines and back taxes totaling about $70 million.
The scandal essentially landed her blacklisted in China and disrupted her choice of roles for several years. During this time, she focused on her cosmetics brand, Beauty enthusiast.
Fan Bingbing technically had two films released after the scandal, but she was cast in both before it happened. The 355 AND The king’s daughter were box office failures, earning Fan Bingbing a nomination for the “Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Supporting Actress.”
In 2023, Fan Bingbing appeared in the Korean-Hong Kong film Green nightwhich was screened at numerous festivals. Green night stars Fan as a Chinese immigrant who becomes entangled with a mysterious woman.
Trapped in a cycle of oppression, Chinese immigrant Jin Xia (Fan Bingbing) works at customs at Incheon Airport in South Korea, where she meets a mysterious green-haired girl (Lee Joo-young) who acts suspiciously at security checkpoint. Overwhelmed by the unexpressed attraction between them, she accompanies the enigmatic stranger home only to discover his involvement in a deadly drug trafficking ring. After the two end up killing Xia’s abusive husband, the two go on the run, but when Xia returns to the crime scene to retrieve the drugs left behind by the green-haired girl, their plans to find freedom together take a dangerous turn.

On October 18th, Green night was finally made available on US streaming platforms, marking its return. At the time of writing, the film has received mixed reviews, even from a popular site Rodger Ebert.
It’s not an unbearable film, but it’s not particularly consequential either, despite the audacity of its themes. In this case, a star’s big return comes not with a bang but with a whimper.
