With the world’s attention now on Moo Deng, it’s no surprise that some have spoken out about the animal’s treatment, including a clip that went viral on X.
In a TikTok video, a woman named Jennifer (@JenniferWVegan) shares what she calls a “dark truth” about Moo Deng’s situation. She shares her opinion on animals being bred in captivity for “social media views” and suggests spending more money on preserving wildlife in their habitats.
He goes on to say that conditions at the zoo are not ideal for Moo Deng or his months and urges people not to visit zoos. A repost has received over 4 million views.
And something stupid like this should always be white. I mean, do you do a search first? The comments are just people explaining + giving information. This is a fight and I’m going crazy. photo.twitter.com/FbrWnQ4JPc

Pygmy hippos are an endangered species due to habitat destruction and illegal hunting in the wild.
There is some truth to this claim, even if it is unrelated to the zoo’s treatment of the animal. Khao Kheow Open Zoo recently had to issue a warning to visitors hoping to record their own viral Moo Deng moment by harassing her and threatening legal action.
As for the other ideas in the video, Internet users have presented opposing facts to refute them.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo is also a research facility that actively participates in efforts to conserve various species through captive breeding and monitoring in their natural habitats. The zoo collaborates with other conservation organizations around the world, including Smithsonian National Zoo Park Conservation and Research Center.
Internet users have shared these and other points of view, coming from an environmental context, to deny what was stated in the viral video.
Wrong. Khao Kheow Zoo runs breeding programs for endangered species such as the clouded leopard and pygmy hippos. They also focus on rehabilitation, reintroduction, conservation research and public education to further support wildlife conservation. This lady needs to stop talking. https://t.co/pRlv8rPmlo

The sad part is that so many people think this bullshit about zoos when almost all accredited zoos, like the one where Moo Deng was born, also do research/conservation locally and globally for endangered species, as well as have breeding programs with the goal of reintroducing them into the wild https://t.co/y6yrea5V9v

He knows that all the money the zoo uses to care for its animals comes mainly from tourists, which means that the more tourists go to the zoo, the better the welfare of the animals will be https://t.co/IyjgSUnLes
