KATSEYE’s Manon addresses racism allegations on Instagram cover with Lao illustrations

KATSEYE member Manon has become the subject of online debate after some social media users accused her of racism over the cover photo used for one of her Instagram highlights.

The controversy gained attention shortly after it was confirmed that Manon would appear in KATSEYE’s next project despite currently being on temporary hiatus.

Around the same time, an old video of the idol resurfaced online, showing her misidentified by BTS member J-Hope as another member of the group. The clip prompted some users to revisit his past online activity.

A post focused on Manon’s Instagram Highlights, where she organizes photos from her travels. Many of the covers feature paintings connected to different countries or regions.

However, its highlight labeled “KR,” which features photos from Korea, uses the artwork “That Luang Festival of Luang Prabang” by Lao artist Sompaseuth Chounlamany, Koreaboo reported.

The painting depicts the That Luang Festival, a major Buddhist celebration held in Laos.

Some netizens criticized the choice, saying it suggested that different Asian cultures were treated equally. One commenter wrote: “He also made an Instagram highlight called ‘KR’ with photos from his trip to Korea, but used artwork from a Lao festival as the cover photo. This is such blatant hypocrisy…Is discrimination against Asians considered the ‘acceptable’ type of racism?”

Manon defended himself against accusations of racism

Others also wondered if the image showed a lack of respect towards Korea, while another user said: “Manon has always seemed a bit racist. Just compare the way she treats Asian fans to the way other KATSEYE members treat their fans.”

However, many fans quickly came to Manon’s defense. They pointed out that many of his other Highlight covers also do not directly correspond to the countries they represent.

Examples shared online included artwork by Italian painter Raphael used for Mexico and a painting by French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau representing the United States. Supporters have argued that the covers appear to follow an artistic style rather than always matching the exact location.

The renewed attention comes as KATSEYE continues to ask fans for patience regarding Manon’s absence from the group’s activities.

According to Billboard, in a recent interview with Allure, member Sophia reminded fans not to speculate about her return.

“Since we have announced that this is about her well-being, it is not ours or anyone else’s job to rush her,” Sophia said.

She added that the group wants to give Manon all the time and space she needs, while encouraging fans to continue showing love, support and patience during her recovery.
