Ji Chang Wook is now one of South Korea’s most beloved actors, known for his successful career, good looks and global popularity. However, long before becoming a Hallyu superstar, he experienced a difficult childhood, filled with financial hardship, the loss of his father, and countless part-time jobs to support his family.
Born on July 5, 1987 in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province, Ji Chang Wook dreamed of becoming an actor despite growing up in difficult circumstances. His greatest childhood tragedy came when his father died while he was in elementary school, leaving his mother to raise him alone.
The actor has spoken openly about the emotional impact of losing his father at such a young age. “I grew up with a single mother. My father died when I was young. It was a huge loss and I realized early on that life wasn’t easy. Looking back, I think I showed signs of depression as a child, but my mother’s love helped me get through it all.”
Growing up in a low-income family also meant constantly worrying about school expenses and tuition. “I was very worried about money. Even as a student, I felt enormous pressure about grades and finances.”
During his appearance on You Quiz on the Block in 2024, Ji Chang Wook revealed that his mother ran a Korean barbecue restaurant before later opening a small spicy fish soup restaurant to support the family.
Whenever the restaurants were full, he stepped in to help. “Cleaning the barbecue grills was the hardest part. At the chowder restaurant, cleaning the aquariums was what I feared the most.” Watching his mother work tirelessly from morning to night motivated him to do everything he could to ease his burden.
Before becoming an actor, Ji Chang Wook held numerous part-time jobs to pay for his education. He worked in bars, restaurants and even as a cargo loader. The actor revealed that manual labor was the highest paying job he ever had. “My mother and I couldn’t always afford the tuition. The best-paying job I ever had was manual labor. My only goal was to make sure my mother never had to worry about money again.”
Despite his academic excellence, Ji Chang Wook surprised his mother by choosing to study theater and film at Dankook University instead of pursuing a more stable profession. His mother feared that her quiet, introverted son was not suited to the entertainment industry, leading to disagreements between them.
To prove his commitment, Ji Chang Wook secretly worked part-time to pay for acting lessons before the college entrance exam. After only a few months of preparation, he successfully gained admission to Dankook University.
Ji Chang Wook began acting in stage productions and short films in 2006, and then made his screen debut in the independent film Sleeping Beauty (2008). His breakthrough came in 2010 with the hit KBS drama Smile Again, which received excellent ratings and earned him the Best Actor award at the KBS Drama Awards.
From there, he established himself as one of Korea’s leading actors through hit dramas including Empress Ki, Healer, The K2, Suspicious Partner, Backstreet Rookie, The Sound of Magic, The Worst of Evil, Welcome to Samdal-ri, Gangnam B-Side. His filmography also includes Fabricated City, Hard Hit and Revolver, while he has remained active in musicals and music releases for fans in Korea and Japan.
Despite achieving fame and financial success, Ji Chang Wook continued to live with his mother. Speaking to You Quiz on the Block, he explained that after witnessing her sacrifices during her childhood, taking care of her became one of his biggest priorities. He shared that although his busy filming schedule often limits the time they spend together, he now sees it as his responsibility to take care of the woman who dedicated her life to raising him.
In a previous interview with Soompi, Ji Chang Wook said that his biggest personal goal is simply to become “a better son.” Her decision to continue living with her mother has earned praise from Korean fans, who see it as a reflection of her humility, gratitude and strong family values.
