Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for its upcoming original series The East Palace, which marks the highly anticipated return of Nam Joo-hyuk in a dark fantasy mystery filled with supernatural elements. The eight-episode series is scheduled to debut exclusively on Netflix on July 17 and is already generating buzz thanks to its unique world-building, star-studded cast and haunting premise.

The East Palace follows the story of Gucheon, played by Nam Joo-hyuk, a mysterious figure capable of freely traversing the human world and the spirit realm. Together with palace maid Saenggang, played by Noh Yoon-seo, Gucheon is tasked with investigating a sinister curse hidden within the Eastern Palace at the request of the king. As the pair delve deeper into the mystery, they discover dark secrets that lie beyond the edges of reality, setting the stage for a suspenseful supernatural adventure.

The upcoming drama brings together an impressive creative team. The series is directed by Choi Jung-gyu, known for his work in the acclaimed drama The Devil Judge, while the screenplay is written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, the authors of the popular occult thriller The Guest. Their collaboration raised expectations for richly detailed mythology and suspenseful storytelling that blends historical settings with supernatural horror.

In The East Palace, Nam Joo-hyuk plays one of the most unconventional roles of his career. The actor plays a character who navigates both the world of the living and the spirit realm, facing ghosts and supernatural entities as he unravels the palace’s hidden curse.

The newly released promotional poster shows Gucheon carrying a peach branch on his back while surrounded by menacing red energy. The tagline, “Beyond the Twilight Zone, into the Spirit World,” alludes to the drama’s chilling atmosphere and vast fantasy universe. Many fans are already expecting a more mature and intense performance from the actor compared to his previous projects.

Rising star Roh Yoon-seo plays Saenggang, a palace maid with the ability to hear the voices of spirits. His collaboration with Nam Joo-hyuk is expected to form the emotional and investigative core of the story as they work together to uncover the truth behind the curse.
