The preliminary round of Miss Hong Kong 2026 became a hot topic online after photos of this year’s contestants were released, sparking debate over the pageant’s standards and contestants’ appearances.
Nearly 100 women from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Inner Mongolia and other regions advanced to the preliminary selection stage. The contestants displayed diverse backgrounds and appearances, ranging from petite candidates to taller, more fully formed candidates. Some participants had also competed in previous years and returned to try again.
After photos of the auditions were posted, discussions quickly spread across social media. Many netizens support it the overall quality of this year’s contestants appeared weaker than in previous editions of the competition. Several local media outlets also drew attention to the accomplishment unflattering comments about the appearance of some contestantsfurther fueling the online debate.
Despite the criticism, many participants expressed confidence in their abilities. Contestant Zhang Tingting, for example, said he decided to enter the competition after encouragement from friends and remains optimistic about further progress.
Not everyone agreed with the negative ratings. Supporters pointed this out the event is still in the initial selection phase and judging the overall quality of the competition based solely on preliminary photos is unfair. They noticed it the purpose of the audition process is to identify the strongest candidates for subsequent rounds.
Several contestants have already attracted positive attention, including Aurora Han, a 25-year-old medical professional who holds a master’s degree in cardiac ultrasound from the University of Melbourne and currently works in Sydney. She was cited by local media as one of the top contestants in this year’s pageant.
According to Hong Kong media, more than half of Miss Hong Kong 2026 contestants hold postgraduate degrees or higher qualifications in fields such as law, medicine and finance. TVB executive Virginia Lok described this year’s lineup as one of the strongest in recent yearswhile Eric Tsang pointed this out character and personal qualities are more important than appearance alone.
Launched in the early 70s, Miss Hong Kong it has produced numerous stars, including Maggie Cheung, Michelle Reis, Anita Yuen and Myolie Wu. However, in recent years the competition has faced recurring criticism from believing spectators it no longer produces contestants with the same level of star power as it did in its heyday.
As the competition progresses, the focus will remain on the contestants’ ability to overcome initial criticism and prove themselves in the later stages of the competition.
