Mimi of Oh My Girl has opened up about a chilling voice phishing experience, proving that even the most cautious individuals aren’t completely safe from increasingly sophisticated scams.
She shared her story during a recent appearance on the YouTube variety show “Salon Drip” on the TEO channel, alongside veteran entertainer Ji Suk Jin.
Mimi revealed that she is extremely strict about protecting her personal data:
- Disable search suggestions completely
- Delete your browsing history regularly
- Avoid using voice assistant features
- Restricts most online functions due to distrust of the Internet
He explained, “I don’t really trust the internet, so I block most of the features.”
Despite her efforts, Mimi has become the target of a persistent scam. He recalled: “For months, I kept receiving KakaoTalk messages saying my card payments were late, calling me ‘Kim Soon-im’. It was a name I didn’t recognize, so I was really confused.
The repeated messages created discomfort, especially because they used a specific name and a financial request, a common tactic in phishing schemes designed to cause panic.
Listening to his story, Ji Suk Jin immediately identified it as a typical voice phishing method.
Intrigued, Mimi searched for the name “Kim Soon-im” and discovered similar cases of real scams, confirming her suspicion that this was a coordinated fraud attempt.
She admitted feeling troubled: “Even when you’re careful, you can still be targeted.”
During the same appearance, Mimi also touched on her cautious view of technology. While he finds AI-related innovations, such as food robots, interesting, he stressed that he still approaches new technologies with care, in line with his attitude towards privacy.
