Chinese singer and actor Lay Zhang recently became the center of widespread speculation after online bloggers claimed he had been placed under a temporary broadcast ban in China.
According to several entertainment bloggers, internal documents were circulated among major digital platforms and television networks stating that Lay Zhang, also known as Zhang Yixing, would be barred from appearing in entertainment activities. The restrictions reportedly include performances, variety shows, gala appearances and other public entertainment events.
The controversy reportedly stems from Lay Zhang’s participation in activities as a member of K-pop group EXO. Some bloggers said that because he holds a position within a national theater organization in China, he was called back to explain his activities. Reports also suggested that Lay Zhang later asked to withdraw from that official affiliation.

Following these rumors, speculation spread that a “soft ban” had been implemented against the artist, with some bloggers claiming the restriction could last up to a year.
However, Lay Zhang’s studio quickly responded by releasing an official statement denying the claims. The statement said the broadcast ban rumors were inaccurate and urged the public not to spread unverified information.

Despite the denial, the blogger who originally shared the news later doubled down on his claims, arguing that the studio’s statement avoided directly addressing the main issue. The blogger insisted that such information would not have been published publicly if it had not already been circulated among industry insiders.
No official confirmation has been released from government regulators or major broadcasters at this time. Consequentially, the alleged ban remains untested, and the situation continues to fuel debate among fans and observers of the Chinese entertainment industry.
Lay Zhang is widely recognized as a major solo artist in China and a member of EXO. In addition to his music career, he has also built a strong presence in film, television and business ventures in the Chinese entertainment market.
