Netflix’s highly anticipated K-drama Can this love be translated? is attracting intense criticism even before its release, as controversy over its male lead and second male lead ignites backlash online. The series, starring Go Youn Jung and Kim Seon Ho, unveiled its official poster and teaser on December 17, 2025 (KST), only to be met with polarized responses from Korean viewers.
Kim Seon Ho, cast as the male lead, remains a controversial figure following his widely publicized 2021 scandal. Although some fans support his return, many netizens continue to express discomfort with his casting in high-profile projects, especially alongside a rising star like Go Youn Jung. Critics have described the pairing as awkward, with comments ranging from “They don’t even look good together” to frustration with Kim’s continued presence in leading roles despite past controversies.
Adding to the hype is the inclusion of Japanese actor Sota Fukushi as the second male lead. His appearance in a 2015 documentary, Please teach us something about warwhere he expressed admiration for his grandfather’s connection to the World War II kamikaze unit, sparked concerns. Korean viewers labeled it as a “right-wing” nationalist, accusing him of glorifying Japan’s military history, a particularly sensitive topic in Korea. Her casting in a romantic role in the K-drama was then met with harsh criticism and calls for a boycott.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the drama is written by the Hong Sisters, screenwriters who have previously faced accusations of plagiarism. This has led to widespread labeling of the show as “problematic,” with social media full of feelings like “Why do a show like this?” AND “There’s nothing attractive about it, from the writers to the actors.”

Despite its promising visuals and a popular female protagonist, Can this love be translated? faces an uphill battle to gain public approval. Given the ongoing disapproval of its casting choices and creative direction, some moviegoers have already vowed to skip its premiere. The drama is scheduled for release on January 16, 2026, but unless perceptions change dramatically, it risks being overshadowed by its controversies before it even airs.
