A few Hollywood scandals shocked the world with equally or uniform opinion proudly as the relationship between acclaimed director Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, the adoptive daughter of the actress Mia Farrow, the long-standing partner of Allen.
What started as a family connection exploded in global titles in 1992, when Farrow discovered photographs of Nude soon in possession of Allen. At the time Allen was 56 years old, while he was early from the early 1920s.
A scandal that shattered Hollywood
Allen and Farrow had been a partner since 1979, raising several children together, both biological and adopted. Soon-Yi, originally from South Korea, had been adopted by Farrow and his ex-husband André Previn in 1978. Although Allen never formally adopted soon, the revelation of their relationship was seen as a betrayal of trust and moral scandal.
The US media reacted with indignation, with the titles that called the deal “a stain on Hollywood”. The talk shows analyzed the controversy for months and the public opinion went abruptly against Allen. Farrow described him as “the worst pain that a mother could try” and later he accused Allen of abusing of another daughter adopted, Dylan Farrow, stars that investigations at the time did not support themselves.
Hollywood himself separated in factions: those who supported Farrow and those who were from Allen and soon.
Love against all forecasts
Despite the turmoil, Allen and Soon-Yi insisted that their relationship was based on love, not on fulfillment. Allen said:
“I’ve never been a paternal figure soon. We started with two independent adults.”
In 1997, the couple married in Venice, in Italy, a union scheduled for many would have collapsed quickly. Instead, almost 30 years later, the couple remains together. They adopted two daughters, Bechet and Manzie, and often appear from hand in the first of the previews.
Allen often accredited soon to have brought stability to his life, saying: “He doesn’t care about fame. He takes care of me as a person. He changed my life”.
Career obscured by the scandal
Allen continued to make films almost every year, earning awards and prizes, but his personal life has never escaped the shade of the scandal. The #Metoo movement has rekindled control, on the accusations of Dylan Farrow who reimburse and several actors who express regret for having worked with him. The studies have moved away and the projects have been set aside.
Even so, Allen’s wedding and soon-yi persists, a paradoxical example of resistance in a city where many famous couples separate quickly.
For most of the American public, the Allen-Soon-Yi report remains morally unacceptable, often cited as one of the most notorious scandals in Hollywood. Yet, in a turning point of irony, this report once condemned lasted longer than many of the so -called “golden couples” of Hollywood.
The controversy surrounding Allen and Soon-Yi is a reminder of the blurred lines between private life, public morality and price of the scandal in the entry sector that, even three decades later, continues to arouse anger, disbelief and debate.
