Kang Ha-Neul was born in Busan as the eldest of two brothers from parents who were both former actors of the theater. His father studied theater at the Soul Institute of the Arts, while his mother, who also had experience as a fashion model, graduated from the Department of Theater and Cinema of the University of Kyungsung.
