Netflix caught using AI-generated artwork to promote popular Korean series

The use of AI “art,” especially by big, for-profit brands, continues to be a controversial topic. The current lack of clarity around copyright and controversial AI training methods have sparked backlash, particularly from artists who have criticized companies for using AI instead of hiring human artists.

In November 2024, Netflix removed an AI poster used for promotion Arcane, a popular animated series set in the world of Riot games‘ League of Legends. After viewers noticed that Netflix had extended the image using generative AI, creating a stir online, brand leader Riot Games called out Netflix, saying it was “disrespectful to the incredible artists who worked on the show.”

Before Arcane controversy, Netflix has been accused of using artificial intelligence to alter photographs of a killer orchestrator Jennifer Pan in the true crime documentary What Jennifer did. Now, viewers have spotted another AI image.

Unlike Jennifer Pan’s photographs, the latest Netflix image under review appears to be 100% created by artificial intelligence. This image of a chef opening a refrigerator is currently being used for advertising purposes Chef and my refrigerator, a korean cooking show also known as Please take care of my refrigerator.

Please take care of my refrigerator, which aired from 2014 to 2019, features celebrity guests and celebrity chefs creating dishes using whatever they find in celebrities’ fridges. The new season of the show will premiere on Netflix on January 12.

Unlike the Arcane miniature, the use of AI for this miniature has gone largely unnoticed thus far, until the release of the new season. Netizens who spotted the image, however, are pointing out its revealing flaws.

For example, the handles are located on the inside of the refrigerator doors, which would make it impossible to close the refrigerator in real life. Something strange seems to be happening with the upholstery too.
