MBC television network has canceled the broadcast of the Gayo Daejejeon WANNABE awards show, originally scheduled for December 31, to honor the victims of the Jeju plane crash.
The awards show will instead air as a pre-recorded broadcast at a later date, according to an exclusive report from Xports News.
The exact broadcast schedule, including date and time, will be announced later. There will be no changes in the artist lineup.
MBC also canceled the “Entertainment Awards” and “Drama Awards” to honor the victims of the deadly Jeju Air plane crash, which claimed the lives of 179 people and injured two of the 181 total passengers on board, as reported by AP.
The plane, a Boeing 737-800, had departed from Bangkok and attempted to land at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea.
After an initial failed landing attempt, the aircraft received a bird strike warning, with the pilot issuing a distress signal before the aircraft crashed with its nose landing gear closed, overshooting the runway and catching fire as crashed into a concrete fence.
South Korea has announced a period of national mourning to honor the victims, which will begin on December 29 and end on January 4.
“To unite the grieving nation, the live broadcast of the ‘MBC Drama Awards 2024’ originally scheduled for December 30 at 8.40pm has been canceled and will be replaced with a pre-recorded broadcast,” MBC said.
“We pray for the souls of the victims and once again extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
