The next steps for impeachment begin.
South Korea’s National Assembly has voted to impeach current President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The second impeachment vote for Yoon Suk Yeol was held starting at 4 PM KST on December 14. A total of 291 members of the National Assembly were present at the vote. 204 members voted in favor of his impeachment, 85 members voted against it, and three members abstained from voting.
Given that the Democratic Party controls 192 seats in the National Assembly, this means that at least 12 members of the ruling party, the same party as Yoon Suk Yeol, voted in favor of his impeachment.
Since Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment has been approved by the National Assembly, his presidential powers will be immediately suspended and the Constitutional Court will now have to decide whether his powers should be restored or whether he should be removed from office.
