YouTuber Tzuyang wins against Kim SE-EU: Garo Research Leader Standless for defamation

According to Munhwa Ilbo on 9 September, the Soul Gangnam Police Station sent Kim Se-EU, head of Garo Sero Research, to the judicial procedure with five accusations, including violation of the law on the network of information and communications (defamation) and violation of the law on the punishment of stalking.

The controversy began in July last year, when Kim SE-EU published a recording that suggests that YouTuber Tzuyang had previously worked in an entertainment bar. Despite the denial of Tzuyang, Kim Se-EU has continued to convey programs that challenge his explanation.

Tzuyang claimed that Kim SE-EU’s actions forced his private life to the eyes of the public without consent, not leaving it another choice than to release a video declaration. He later filed a criminal complaint against him.

Initially, in February, the case was archived due to insufficient tests. However, Tzuyang’s legal team has filed an appeal to the office of the ministries of the central district of Soul. After examining the case, the accusation ordered an additional investigation.

As a result, the police reassigned the case to a new investigative team, which led a reinvestigation before submitting Kim Se-EU to the accusation.

With Kim SE-EU who is now formally accused, the case has rekindled the debate on computer defamation, on privacy rights and responsibility in online transmissions. For Tzuyang, who has millions of followers and is widely considered as one of the best creators of Mukbang in Korea, the accusation marks a significant step in his struggle to defend his reputation and personal life.
