The Korean drama of the Korean temporal path “Heo’s Diner” was previewed with great expectations, reporting the Trope of the era from Joseon to modern. However, after only two episodes, the public is expressing disappointment, especially towards the XIUMIN of Exo and his representation of Heo Gyun.
A frustratingly useless protagonist
In the drama, Heo Gyun is a progressive thinker in Joseon, dreaming of a society in which people live equally without a rigid class system. His radical ideals lead to exile and while fleeing his life, suddenly travels over time 400 years in the future, landing in the modern Seoul. Here, he must adapt to a new world and ends up working in a restaurant owned by mother and daughter who saved him.
While the premise seemed promising, the spectators quickly frustrated by the representation of Heo Gyun. Rather than appearing as a “genius in advance of the times”, it comes out as in the dark and painfully incompetent. He is missing the basic knowledge, both in the era of Joseon and in the modern seoul, making him a difficult protagonist to cheer on. Instead of showing its intellect, the drama focuses on embarrassing comic moments and exaggerated accidents, which many find unaware and boring.
XIUMIN’s style and acting
In addition to the recourse is the controversial appearance and performance of XIUMIN. In both historical and modern environments, it sports long permanent hair, heavily drawn eyebrows and even light -colored lipstick, leading some to compare it with an “aunt”. Its rigid expressions and unnatural delivery of line only worsen the situation, making humor forced and ineffective.
The disappointed audience did not hold back their criticisms:
- I couldn’t even finish the first 20 minutes. The main character is so naive and useless. It is unbearable to look at.
- I hoped for a fun drama, but the acting is rigid and robotic. And please, make -up team, stop exaggerating with the make -up of male actors, in particular lipstick!
- At the beginning, I thought the main protagonist was a middle -aged woman in that white dress … the style is horrible.
- The most stupid protagonist I’ve ever seen, yet they call him “genius” …
- Travel stories in time always have a phase in which the command is disoriented, but at least they allow them to try to be competent instead of behaving like a fool.
- XIUMIN is cute, but this role does not adapt to him at all.
Can Xiiumin change things?
This is the third role of XIUMIN actor, but his lack of experience is evident. From unnatural facial expressions to struggles with dialogue, the role seems overwhelming for him. Fans hope that the drama advances, his performance will improve. However, for now, “Heo’s Diner” has left many frustrated and impressed spectators.
