XG’s name change sparks a viral reaction

Recently, XG found themselves at the center of an intense online debate following an announcement intended to reflect their evolving identity as a group.

Last year, member Cocona publicly came out as trans-male non-binary and revealed he had undergone surgery. The announcement attracted international attention, with many fans praising Cocona’s openness and courage. At the same time, it sparked discussion about how to classify the group, particularly as they continued to be described as a “girl group.”

On January 12 (KST), XG addressed the conversation directly by announcing that they would be “evolving” the meaning of their name. Originally standing for Xtraordinary Girls, XG was redefined as Xtraordinary Genes, a change which the group explained was meant to reflect their mixed-gender lineup and their broader identity moving forward.

Initial fan reactions were largely positive, with many applauding the group for adapting their branding in a way that acknowledged Cocona’s identity while maintaining the group’s unity.

However, the discussion took a sharp turn when the announcement went viral beyond K-pop spaces.

On social media, some users began drawing comparisons between XG’s use of the word “geniuses” and a controversial American Eagle ad featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. The ad used puns on “cool jeans/genes,” and because Sweeney is blonde with blue eyes, critics argued it subtly echoed ideas related to white genetic superiority, often associated with eugenics. These interpretations were further amplified by Sweeney’s actions after the ad ran, which intensified scrutiny of the campaign.

In that context, the new XG name was seen by some as an inconvenient reminder. Critics have also highlighted Japan’s historical role as a colonial power, arguing that the term “geniuses” has more weighty implications when viewed through that lens.

Others strongly objected to the criticism. Supporters have pointed out that XG’s rebranding exists within an entirely different cultural and conceptual framework. The group has long leaned on a science fiction, futuristic and alien-inspired concept, with “genies” framed as individuality, uniqueness and evolution rather than biology or racial hierarchy.

Fans defending XG have argued that stripping the name change of its artistic and cultural context leads to oversimplified and reactionary conclusions.

As the debate continues to circulate online, many observers note that while heightened sensitivity is understandable in today’s political climate, context remains crucial. For now, XG’s name change represents a flashpoint in a larger discussion about identity, symbolism, and how global pop culture is interpreted in vastly different social and historical contexts.
