In a video titled “Why has the number of customers decreased? It’s all because of the culinary class war,” posted on Baek Jong-won’s YouTube channel, “Culinary Class War” winner and “Napoli Matfia” owner Kwon Sung-joon explained his decision to reduce reservations to restaurants.
In the video, Baek Jong-won commented: “I heard that Napoli Matfia’s customers have decreased. The owner intentionally reduced it and I can’t help but commend that decision,” showing his approval for Kwon Sung-joon’s bold move. He added, “From the early stages of ‘Culinary Class War,’ I could tell that Napoli Matfia had something special. Every time there was an individual competition, I had the feeling that if they did well in the team rounds, they could win.”
The video also covered the “Tofu Hell” mission, in which Kwon Sung-joon suggested making a dish with ricotta, which resembles tofu, and mentioned that fried pizza is easy to make in Naples.
When discussing the name of the restaurant, Baek Jong-won joked, “This place will be fully booked, so there is no need for promotion.” Kwon Sung-joon revealed that the name comes from the area he lived in while in Italy.
Kwon Sung-joon explained that, as a winner of the program, he prioritized customer satisfaction to maintain its credibility, stating: “If customer satisfaction declines, the credibility of the program may suffer.”
He also shared that he currently only has one employee, to which Baek Jong-won responded with surprise, asking if he does all the work himself.
Kwon Sung-joon reflected on his time studying in Italy and mentioned the impact of the show “Baek Jong-won’s Alley Restaurant,” saying: “I waited for the show every week. I even cried when I watched the episode about ‘Hongtak House.’” He added that he spent a lot of time thinking about how to run a business, thanks to Baek Jong-won’s advice.
