Initially built on a premise that seemed full of promises, Resident playbook He fell rapidly in an unexpected pit of blamnity.
Set in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Jonno branch of the Yulje Medical Center, the series follows four young residents who surf the tests to become real medical professionals.
Spin-off full of promises that vacillated rapidly
The main characters, on paper, each offer intriguing traits:

From the first episodes, the resident playbook begins to exhibit important weaknesses:
- The narration lacks drama and climax, making the narrative emotionally flat and disengaged.
- The medical scenarios, rather than exploring professional stress or emotional tolls, feel repetitive and health without conflicts or impact.
- The conversations between the characters are unable to reveal emotional complexity, instead by turning without a destination without a memorable or significant development.
- The main theme of the series, The Journey of Loving One Profession is portrayed in a life without life and not inspired, without internal crises or dramatic turning point.
The result is a medical drama stripped of emotional impact without ethical dilemmas, urgent emergency scenes or touching moments of growth.
Characters without depth, weightless conflicts
The support characters, who could have enriched the narrative from senior doctors and nurses to patients are reduced to background or narrative weightless figures. They simply seem to fill the space rather than influence or challenge the main characters in any substantial way.
The only character introduced with a potential for the real senior doctor of conflict Myeong Eun-Won (Kim Hye-in) is portrayed in such a clumsy and unique way that his presence interrupts only the flow. His negative energy is not motivated, without psychological depth or a convincing arc of character.
Equally disappointing is the romantic subplot between Yi Young and Do Won (Jung Joon Won). Tested to provide emotional substance, the relationship seems forced and not very convincing. Despite the intimate scenes, their chemistry is non -existent. Conversations, observations and expressions feel empty and without authenticity, making romanticism plausible.
The cast of the show, despite the individual promise, cannot compensate for the weak script. The central quartet that should have brought young energy and rooted emotion presents itself as embarrassing and disconnected. Despite the various backgrounds and personality, their representations are flat and indistinct.
The representation of Yun-Jung of Yi Young, who is not short of expectations, is of particular concern. Despite the previous success in the roles in Alchimy of Souls and Moving, his performance here lacks depth. As a character who has been written with emotional complexity, the safe and hold of Go cannot convey internal conflicts, making Yi Young feel lifeless and emotionally distant.
Support characters such as Nam-Kyung, Sa-Bi and Jae-Il are not better. While their stories could have added strata to the narrative, they suffer from a lack of emotional progression, transforming their dialogue into mechanical line readings. Even the scenes that should have evoke strong emotions: professional failures, patient loss, internal conflicts are hurry up and underdeveloped.
The remarkable exception is Jo Do-Won (Jung Joon Won), whose calm and nuanced performance stands out. It brings a subtle emotional depth in its scenes, in particular those involving patients. However, its stable presence cannot save chemistry with Go Youun-Jung, while their combination continues to feel not corresponding and emotionally distant.
The surprising impact of the old cast members
The casting, although bold in the selection of new talents, raises questions that the production team has given priority to individual profiles compared to the chemistry of Ensemble Coesive.
Many spectators admitted that the only truly engaging moments were the short appearances of family characters from the playlist of the IK-Jun hospital, Seok-Hyung, Song-Hwa whose time on the screen managed to provide more emotional resonance than the protagonists in an entire season.
In retrospective, Resident Playbook has lost a golden opportunity to be a compelling and emotionally resonant spin-off. Rather than to forge one’s identity with confidence, it remains excessively dependent on the formula of the hospital playlist, imitating its tone and its structure while lacking originality and emotional substance. The show opts for depth safety, offering eliminated dialogues and hospital scenes disinfected instead of authentic tension or moral complexity.
What made the playlist of the Amata hospital was not only his medical environment or musical interludes: it was the sincerity of his characters, their emotional imperfections and the deeply human choices they had to face. The playbook resident, unfortunately, replies the surface only while the emotional core is missing.
Cameo, evaluations and illusion of success
Despite its defects, Resident playbook I saw a constant evaluation go up:

- Episode 10: 7.5% at national level, reaching a 9.2% peak in Seoul
