Why are Korean music award ceremonies heading overseas?

One after another, the program of traditional national music award ceremonies marking the end or beginning of each year is revealed.

This year’s MAMA Awards will be held on November 21 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (USA). Afterwards, the shows will continue at the Kyocera Dome Stadium in Japan on November 22 and 23. “MAMA” is a prestigious and well-established national music awards ceremony with a 25-year tradition, known for its conceptual stages and extraordinary artist lineup, garnering immense attention every year.

However, “MAMA” has insisted on hosting the ceremony abroad since 2010, except for the period when international travel was restricted due to COVID-19. The goal was to present an awards show that went beyond the boundaries of Korean music, with most of the participants being national artists, making it closer to a K-pop awards ceremony.

The “Asia Artist Awards 2024” (hereinafter “AAA”) will also be held in Thailand on December 27 at the “Thammasat Museum”, under the name of Asian artists. Starting in 2016, “AAA” attracted attention by integrating awards not only for domestic singers but also for actors. “AAA” has gradually expanded overseas, starting with Vietnam in 2019 and hosting the event in Japan in 2021.

The “Seoul Music Awards”, with a tradition of 33 years, announced for the first time that they will be held overseas. The ’33rd Seoul Music Awards’ will take place at Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand on January 2, 2024. The organizers of the ‘Seoul Music Awards’, who promised the participation of more than 20 top K-pop stars, expressed confidence in the awards ceremony.

As K-pop’s global prominence continues to grow, there is growing international interest in national music award ceremonies. Additionally, due to higher ticket prices for overseas shows compared to domestic ones, it may be an unavoidable choice for generating revenue. However, considering the busy schedules of artists who have to travel repeatedly in and out of the country, as well as fans who, despite it being a national awards ceremony, may miss the chance to enjoy the event in person, it is understandable the disappointment.

National music awards ceremonies are expanding their reach internationally amid K-pop’s growing global popularity. Whether these music award ceremonies, which can be considered K-pop festival stages, will meet the expectations of domestic fans abroad remains a topic of great interest.
