Broadcaster Eom Ji Yoon unexpectedly became the center of controversy after joining girl group LE SSERAFIM’s “SPAGHETTI” challenge.
Released through M2’s YouTube channel and other platforms like TikTok, the video featured Kim Chaewon, Kazuha, and Eom Ji Yoon participating in a playful dance challenge to the group’s new song. “SPAGHETTI.”
In the clip, before Kim Chaewon begins her choreography, Eom Ji Yoon (in disguise) touches Chaewon’s head after raising her pinky to her lips. Once the routine is over, Eom Ji Yoon dramatically hugs Kim Chaewon and leans in for what appears to be a kiss. Surprised, Kim Chaewon screams and steps back, but Eom Ji Yoon continues to hold her in a fun, over-the-top hug.
However, many international fans misinterpreted the scene, unaware of Eom Ji Yoon’s identity or comedic character. Some harshly criticized the interaction, leaving comments like “Someone help Chaewon,” “Who is that monster on the right?” “Is that guy crazy?” AND “Get away from Chaewon.”
The negative reaction arose from a misunderstanding: Eom Ji Yoon had filmed the video as her male alter ego Eom Ji Hoon, a character she introduced in June known for her charming “celebrity chef” persona. With this transformation, many foreign fans did not recognize her and assumed inappropriate behavior from an unknown male figure.
In response, Korean fans chimed in, leaving explanatory comments in various languages to clear up the confusion and correct the mistaken identity. They have actively worked to inform others that the “man” in the video is actually Eom Ji Yoon, a comedian known for her satirical characters and comedic timing.
This incident highlights the cultural and contextual gaps that can arise in global fan communities, especially in the fast-paced world of K-pop content.
