After 2 months of broadcast, “When the Phone Rings” finally concluded its journey with a happy ending.
At the beginning of the last episode (episode 12), 406 shoots Baek Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok) and Hong Hee-joo (Chae Soo-bin) cries desperately. When Hong Hee-joo wakes up, the fact is that Baek Sa-eon has disappeared from her life. He has been missing for six months after quitting his job and donating all his property.
With Park Do-jae’s advice, Hong Hee-joo begins searching for the reason why Baek Sa-eon suddenly disappears. As she searches for the reason behind her husband’s disappearance, she discovers that Baek Sa-eon has silently prepared many things to make her happy, from learning how to become a good husband to taking care of her father. One day, he receives a call with passcode 604 and finally suggests that Baek Sa-eon lives in Argan, a place at war.
Hong Hee-joo decided to visit Argan to find Baek Sa-eon even though everyone around her was against the decision. Asking locals for directions, he finally finds a place to watch the sunset, Baek Sa-eon’s favorite scene. As previously warned, Hong Hee-joo is attacked by a masked gunman. At the critical moment, Baek Sa-eon appears and saves her. Baek Sa-eon gets angry at Hong Hee-joo seeing her come to such a dangerous place even though he reminded her to wait for him to return. Eventually, he confesses the truth about her disappearance, revealing that he felt guilty for being the cause of her younger brother’s death, which silenced Hong Hee-joo for 20 years.
However, Hong Hee-joo immediately forgave him with a kiss. After being separated for so long, the two spend a warm night together and officially reunite. They move to a new house and get married again. Baek Sa-eon also changes his name to Baek Yoo-yeon. At the family party, Ji Sang-woo and Yoori also announce their wedding.
The ending of “When the Telephone Rings” received compliments for having comprehensively addressed all the issues, even the relationships with the secondary characters. Episode 12 ended with Baek Sa-eon and Hong Hee-joo walking hand in hand like a normal couple.
