On July 28 in Yeouido, Soul, the director Ahn Joo-Young sat for an interview to discuss his work on S-lineWavve’s original thriller fantasy thriller. S-line It introduces a provocative concept in which a red-night line such as the “S line”-are visible between people who have had sexual relationships. How this line appears, exposes prohibited desires and hidden truths, transforming ordinary life into psychological suspense.
Ahn Joo-Yung explained that the original webtoon inspired it to face the project. “The material of origin was compelling. While it contained provocative elements, sex was used more as MacGuffin – a narrative tool – to explore various aspects of human nature”, he said. “Rather than focusing exclusively on realism, I wanted to show different sides of people by incorporating surreal elements. This is what made the history exciting.”
He stressed that the concept of the same line S is not intrinsically negative. “Until it is not linked to criminal behavior, I don’t think the S line should be seen negatively. But since unfortunate things happen for this, I focused more on those darkest aspects.”
A significant challenge was how to view the S on the screen. “We worked closely with the CG team. If it resembled too much a laser, it seemed unnatural. If it were too opaque, it was not quite visible.” The director Ahn explained. “We have gone through many tests and errors to find a plot that has reached the right balance, but not disruptive.”
Facing the feedback that the ending (episode 6) was confused or hasty, Ahn Joo-Young admitted “I felt under pressure to conclude everything neatly in the last episode. When we filmed, I thought that all the explanations were included, but it seems that they did not come across clearly as I hoped.”
It is interesting to note, S-line It was originally destined to be an Omnibus format, reflecting the episodic and segmented nature of the original webtoon, which did not have a fixed protagonist. However, during the adaptation process, the decision was made to consolidate the story around a central character. “We tried to tie the episodes together with a main protagonist. I would like us to have more episodes to work with”, Ahn Joo-Yung added. “We have selected episodes that adapt well to the new characters we have created.”
As for the general message he wanted to transmit, he reflected Ahn Joo-Young, “The idea of being able to” see the S line “symbolizes how people are naturally curious about the private life of others, even if they want to keep their hidden. This is the paradox that I wanted to explore through the drama.”
All episodes of S-line They are now available for streaming exclusively on Wavve.
