Victoria Beckham admits her microphone was once turned off because she sang ‘too badly’

On October 10, fashion icon and former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham released a new Netflix documentary that chronicles almost 30 years of his life, from pop stardom to fashion empire.

The documentary opens with a nostalgic tone, with the 1998 ballad Until we meet again – the first single the Spice girls released after member Geri Halliwell left the group. But in this context, the song takes on a deeper meaning: it symbolizes the moment Victoria said goodbye to “Posh Spice,” the glamorous alter ego that launched her fame.

Archive footage from the group’s 2007–2008 reunion tour shows Victoria realizing she no longer wanted to be on stage. Known for her elegance and style, she was also the member often mocked for her limited vocal abilities – and as the documentary confirms, those jokes weren’t entirely unfounded.

Victoria candidly admits that sound engineers occasionally muted her microphone during live shows due to her weak singing voice.

“I had such a thin voice, without much power,” remember. “It wasn’t out of tune, but it was small. Sometimes they would just turn off my microphone.”

Despite these challenges, she said she never took offense, recognizing that her performance style relied more on charisma and attitude than vocal ability.

After the Spice girls disbanded, Victoria attempted to relaunch herself as a solo singer. He signed with Virgin Records and released his debut single Out of mind (2000), a dance track featuring Dane Bowers and the True Steppers, which reached the UK Top 3 largely thanks to her Spice girls fame.

His self-titled debut album Victoria Beckham (2001), however, only sold around 50,000 copies in the UK. Critics dismissed it as “too safe” and lacking in identity, calling it an extension of her Posh Spice image rather than a reinvention. Subsequently single as Let go of your head AND This groove it also failed to have a significant impact.

Victoria admits in the documentary that she eventually realized her heart was no longer in music: “Recording started to feel like a routine, not a passion,” he says. “I didn’t like being in the studio anymore.”

By the mid-2000s, Victoria quietly abandoned the music scene and redirected her energy into fashion, where she found her true calling.

Her brand, Victoria Beckham, has become one of the most respected celebrity fashion brands, earning praise for minimalist design and impeccable tailoring.

THE Netflix the documentary captures this transformation: from an insecure pop star once mute on stage to a global businesswoman in full control of her voice, even if it’s no longer sung.
